The Romantic Road, which winds for about 400 km in southern Germany, offers an extraordinary itinerary among castles, medieval towns, enchanted villages, and breathtaking landscapes. If you have a week or even just a few days available, here is a complete itinerary that will allow you to savor every corner of this famous road. Day 1: Würzburg. The journey along the Romantic Road begins in Würzburg, a city renowned for its historical heritage and viticulture. The Residenz, a sumptuous Baroque palace, is a fundamental stop. The frescoes and stuccoes magnificently preserved offer a glimpse of the luxury of the 18th century. The Marienberg Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the city, offers breathtaking views of the Main Valley and the surrounding vineyards. For a taste of local life, cross the old bridge over the river and stop in one of the traditional wine cellars to taste a glass of wine produced nearby. Day 2: Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Continuing south, the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is an authentic leap into the past. The cobbled streets, city walls, and historic buildings create a unique atmosphere. The market square, dominated by the town hall with its panoramic tower, is the bustling heart of the city. The Medieval Crime Museum illustrates with fascinating details the dark side of European history. Visitors should not leave Rothenburg without trying the Schneeballen, the famous fried sweet balls. Day 3: Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen. The third day offers two medieval treasures: Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen. Dinkelsbühl enchants with its colorful houses and medieval towers. St. George’s Church, with its Gothic architecture, is one of the most impressive places, while the Carnival Museum celebrates the lively local tradition. Nördlingen, located in a meteorite impact crater, offers a unique perspective from its complete and walkable city walls. The Daniel Tower of the town hall is the highest point, with a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding countryside. Day 4: Augsburg. Augsburg, one of the oldest cities in Germany, has an impressive Roman and Renaissance heritage. Visit the Town Hall, with the splendid Golden Hall, and the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing complex still in use. Along the canals and in the historic center, there are Renaissance palaces and Baroque churches, testifying to the city’s wealth during the Renaissance. Day 5: Landsberg am Lech and Wieskirche. Landsberg am Lech, with its Baroque architecture and picturesque streets, is a city that looks like it came out of a postcard. Continue to Wieskirche, an extraordinarily decorated Rococo church declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in the green hills, this church is a place of pilgrimage with sumptuously decorated interiors. Day 6: Füssen and the Castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Reach Füssen, the last stop on the Romantic Road, and visit the nearby castles. Neuschwanstein, with its towers and spires against the Alps, is the iconic fairytale castle that inspired Disney’s logo. Hohenschwangau, Ludwig II’s summer residence, is more sober but equally fascinating, with beautifully decorated interiors and panoramic views of the lakes. Day 7: Explore the region around Füssen. Conclude your trip by exploring the breathtaking landscapes around Füssen. Lake Forggensee offers relaxing cruises, while hiking trails lead to panoramic peaks like Tegelberg. After a long day of adventures, relax in the local thermal baths surrounded by the natural beauty of the Alps. Practical Tips: Travel: Renting a car will allow you to explore the Romantic Road at your own pace, but keep in mind local speed limits.
